What you need to know before hiring a software company

If you're like me, you're sick of London 'tech' companies repackaging decades-old ideas in shiny new wrappers. I've lost count of how many London software companies use the words 'revolutionary', 'money-saving, or 'game-changing' in their blog posts even though they basically do something old and unexciting.

They also seem to think that London is some sort of untapped market where there are no competitors who can actually provide what they promise.

So before you hire a London software company here's how to get them back on track:

1) When your London software company talks about years of experience, ask them which specific problems they have solved - e.g "Oh look, another London software company is trying to sell you London software. They say they have experience but if you look closely, their blog posts only talk about London banks and London fintech."

2) When your London software company makes bold statements about the web too - e.g "Using London bespoke CMS platforms that are based on 20-year-old technology"

3) Ask them what exactly their London software development process is - e.g "Oh look, another bunch of clueless London coders making claims that couldn't be further from the truth: 'A strict agile coding methodology'. How many times do we need to tell you: there's no such thing as a 'strict agile' anything!"

4) Ask who their clients actually are - London software companies love talking about London logos they've put on their London websites. London is a big city but London startups can count themselves lucky if they have 10 clients, never mind the 200+ London software companies claim to have.

5) Ask them how much of their business comes from London - by now you should know that London is just one place where your company is trying to sell London software, so asking them for references in London might be a bad idea. But do ask what percentage of their work actually comes from there. If it's less than 20% then it means that most of their customers are overseas and this will affect your project too because then at least half of your web developers will need to spend time traveling back and forth which London software companies know London software clients don't want to pay for.
